About Simon Richards

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Bournemouth and Poole, Dorset.

I trained at The Royal London Hospital Medical School, qualifying as a Doctor in 1992. Basic surgical training was completed in various London teaching hospitals. I achieved the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1996.

My Orthopaedic Registrar training was on the North-West Thames programme based at The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. I then completed two Fellowship training posts. The first was at The Mater Hospital, Sydney, Australia. This was a hip and knee replacement surgery Fellowship under the supervision of Mr Bill Walter.

On returning to the U.K. I completed a Fellowship in my area of specialist interest of upper limb surgery, at the renowned Pulvertaft unit at The Derby Royal Infirmary, under the supervision of Professor Frank Burke.

I commenced my Consultant Orthopaedic post at Bournemouth and Poole in September 2004.

My Orthopaedic work is focused on my areas of clinical interest. Thus a large proportion of work is of the Hand/Wrist, Elbow and Shoulder. Conditions treated include all types of arthritis, nerve compressions (such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome), lumps and bumps, Dupuytrens disease, and trauma (fractures and soft tissue injuries). Surgical techniques include joint replacement and arthroscopic (key-hole) surgery. I also continue to practise hip and knee replacement surgery as well as knee arthroscopic surgery.

My philosophy is to practise the most up-to date Orthopaedic treatment, but as importantly, have an informative approach to patients. Thus, as a patient you should expect a full consultation and explanation of your Orthopaedic condition. From there you should be able to make an informed decision on the treatment options, and then have “best practice” treatment, with the most modern techniques, carried out under strict infection control guidelines. Results of surgical outcome will be kept, including patient satisfaction surveys on some surgical procedures.
